Nearly every successful Millionaire Wholesaler™ has some sort routine or daily ritual. These are personal rituals that help them stay grounded and establish a sense of order in a stressful and hectic work life.
Often these rituals set the tone for the day and launch Millionaire Wholesalers into maximum productivity.
The importance of these daily or weekly routines is significant as we have seen that those that excel typically engage in very repeatable work processes – including rituals. It’s all part of the discipline that helped them achieve (and keep) their Millionaire Wholesaler status.
People facing situations that induce anxiety or stress typically take comfort in engaging in preparatory activities, inducing a feeling of being back in control and reducing uncertainty.
Recently, a series of investigations by psychologists have revealed intriguing new results demonstrating that rituals can have a causal impact on people’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
Morning routines are particular important because study says that the longer the day goes on, the more fatigue your self-control experiences, making it paramount to make those early morning hours count.
Many of these daily rituals involve preparation for the next day or following up on what happened that day. But often it’s something far more personal like taking care of their mind, body and spirit. [Are Wholesalers Emotionally Fit? with Dr. Barton Goldsmith]
Mind, Body, Spirit
One Millionaire Wholesaler says exercising and yoga are an essential part of her routine that includes waking up at 5:30am and hitting the gym by 6am.
“That’s non-negotiable. I base my day around having time to go to the gym… once I’ve gotten that in I feel like I can rule that world,” she says.
Many others stressed that being on the go constantly can wear you down if you’re not caring for yourself and thus cite eating well and getting enough rest as essential part of their routines for stamina and confidence.
And while taking care of your body is important, we found that some Millionaire Wholesalers find it crucial to get their emotional balance in check every day. One Millionaire Wholesaler says taking a small amount of time to be grateful will ensure you get through the day with a positive attitude – no matter what is thrown at you.
“As I’m standing in the shower every morning I go through what it is I’m grateful for which may or may not have anything to do with work”, he says. It always includes, being grateful for my job, grateful for the company, grateful for the opportunity; I think when you start your day with an attitude of gratitude, it sets your mindset, for what you will confront in a day that can be fraught with surprises, disappointments, highs and lows.”
Looking Good
A positive attitude can also be influenced by how you feel and how others perceive you. Outward appearance is certainly a key to presenting yourself well and an indicator that there is serious work to be done. Wearing your pajamas or casual weekend wear in your home office doesn’t signal your brain that it’s time to work. However, getting dressed for the office – even if it’s your home office – reminds you that you should be getting down to business.
“The first thing that I do when I get up is I take a shower and I do everything as if I’m going to leave the office. So in other words I get dressed in business attire if I’m going to spend some time simply making appointments via phone,” according to one Millionaire Wholesaler.
He adds that, “Frankly, I feel better when I’m dressed to go when I’m sitting at my desk making calls.”
Another Millionaire Wholesaler finds comfort in the repetitiveness of performing a simple task at the start of each day. It’s comforting and signals to them they are ready to start their seemingly non-stop days.
“When I get up in the morning I have the same habit in the morning: I iron my shirts. I never go anywhere without a freshly pressed dress shirt, and these are shirts that come from the cleaner! They’re already neat, but I re-iron my shirts every morning, especially because I’m always wearing French cuffs,” one Millionaire Wholesaler says.
Setting Limits
For many others it’s about setting personal limits and sticking to them. This gives these Millionaire Wholesalers strict indicators that this is work time not play time.
“I have precisely three cups of coffee in the morning, and I don’t have another cup of coffee until 3:00 p.m.,” one Millionaire Wholesaler says.
We interviewed another Millionaire Wholesaler who doesn’t allow himself to listen to music during his work hours. He felt that the deprivation of something he associated with fun and pleasure ensured that he was focused on the tasks at hand.
For another, it’s about having defined work hours, no matter what. Slacking off, even when things don’t go as planned, is not an option.
“I would leave the house typically at 6:00 or 6:30 in the morning. From there, I was not allowed to walk back across the threshold of my home until a minimum of 5:30 in the afternoon. I didn’t care if my day fell apart, or if I didn’t have appointments. If I didn’t have an appointment because somebody cancelled on me or whatever, I’m going to go sit in a parking lot and I’m going to make calls. [Another] wholesaler is out there probably still working, and that just really bothered me,” one Millionaire Wholesaler says.
Follow-Up and Preparation are Crucial
“I don’t think I ever went to bed at night without having all calls returned,” says one Millionaire Wholesaler.
Still others say that their rituals are more directly work-related and involve follow-up and preparation for what they have on tap. Procrastination is not an option to gain Millionaire Wholesaler status.
“I won’t go to bed at night until I have my next day’s appointments fully organized. [This includes] literature I’ve prepared for them, practice management solutions, or even something personal. I do not go to bed at night unless I know I’m fully prepared for what my next day’s appointments are going to be about,” according to another Millionaire Wholesaler.
Another Millionaire Wholesaler says that his day isn’t over until every call is returned. Otherwise, he can’t turn off for the day and will be wondering if he let an opportunity pass him by.
“Number one, returning calls, is always an urgent matter. Don’t let an opportunity go by, in terms of either responding for information or just somebody needed help on something, even if it was not business related. I don’t think I ever went to bed at night without having all calls returned,” he says.
Another Millionaire Wholesaler has a strict morning routine, which helps kick off his day in a very organized fashion.
“My habit is I try to be at the desk by 8 o’clock so I can sit there an hour until 9 and knock out all my emails to start the day. I like to figure out who I need to thank. I go through the sales report and I also then fire out thank-yous for business to four or five top trades to guys. I’ll do that every morning,” he says.
Following up is a key component of closing a deal, working a potential customer and keeping existing customers happy. And while, all of the Millionaire Wholesalers have a process in place to make sure follow-ups get done, several Millionaire Wholesalers say they are diligent about inputting necessary information for follow-ups as part of their daily ritual. “I try to make a habit at the end of the day to call in all the people I saw. We have Dial-A-Note (now Hey DAN). I’m pretty good about getting a lot of notes in there about each advisor. I put the advisors direct phone number into Dial-A-Note so my internal can call him directly to review what we talked about. And, of the ten people I saw, here’s the three or four hot guys you need to call. I try to do those religiously every day and get the day started right, to get the notes in correctly before you get to the next day and before you forget who you saw,” a Millionaire Wholesaler says.
Although, rituals are very important to create a sense of consistency, instill a peace a mind and often jumpstart the day, there are those that say the ability to remain flexible helps them better cope with their ever-changing, fast-paced schedules.
“I’m not a ritual guy. I’m process-driven, but I’m not like a marine. I’ll adapt and overcome, but I’m not the guy that’s going to get up every day at 5:30. I’ll have a lot more elasticity. I guess I changed from where I was very rigid, but my appointment schedule is 9:00, 10:30, 12:00, my next is not until 2:00 or 3:30 or 4:15 and I’m out the door at 5:00, 5:15. I don’t know if you’d call that a habit or a system.”
In her book What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast, Laura Vanderkam writes, “Seizing your mornings is the equivalent of that sound financial advice to pay yourself first. If you wait until the end of the month to save what you have left, there will be nothing left over.
Likewise, if you wait until the end of the day to do meaningful but not urgent things like exercise, pray, read, ponder how to advance your career or grow your organization, or truly give your family your best, it probably won’t happen.”
